Advent: Preparing for the Gift of Jesus

Advent is a season of hopeful anticipation, inviting us to welcome Jesus by allowing His light to transform our lives and hearts. Each Sunday guides us to seek God’s light in the darkness, trust in His promises, share acts of love, and, like Mary, courageously say “yes” to God’s call.

We encourage you to embrace this opportunity to slow down, listen to God’s voice, and reflect with one another as we await the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ God’s greatest gift to humanity.

Remember that no matter where you are in our global community, you can receive this gift. In Jesus, God comes to us in the flesh, truly incarnate, manifesting a love so profound that it unites us all. In the spirit of Advent, dwell in this truth and open your heart to hope, peace, joy, and love rooted in this Christmas miracle, so that you may be truly ready for the wonder of Christ’s presence.

Who was St. John Henry Newman, the Newest Church Doctor?

On November 1st, 2025, St. John Henry Newman was declared the newest Doctor of the Church…but who was he? In this engaging video, join Fr. James Heft S.M. (Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Dayton, Marianist, and our dear friend), as he answers this question with a compelling overview of Newman’s life and enduring influence on the Catholic Church.

Listen as he explores Newman’s spiritual journey from Anglicanism to Catholicism, emphasizing his conversion, scholarship, and deep commitment to faith. Newman’s thoughtful engagement with doctrine, history, and the challenges of Church life will show you exactly why he was declared a Church Doctor, or as Fr. Heft says, “someone whose teachings are considered solid and worth reflecting on for the entire Church.”

Begin Your Three-Part Catechist Journey

Have you ever considered the vocation of a catechist but don’t know where to begin, or have you ever wanted to learn how to nurture and communicate the faith to others? Good news! Our “Basics of Catechist Formation” e-seminar series was created for this very purpose.

The series consists of three consecutive e-seminars (each three weeks long) offered at various times throughout the year, and soon, you`ll have the opportunity to begin this journey yourself.

Offered in Cycle 1 and running from January 19th to February 8th, 2026, we invite you to the first course in this series, "Basics of Catechist Formation 1.1: Catechesis is…," a solid introduction you`ll need before moving on to the second course.

Make sure to Register before January 14, 2026 the next time this course is offered is in June!

The VLCFF is coordinated and sponsored by the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives (IPI) at the University of Dayton - a Catholic Marianist Institution.
