Easter Season: A Living Proclamation

With the arrival of the Easter Season, we joyfully celebrate the Resurrection by inviting the global Church to live in the new life Christ has won, and to let that joy shape our daily discipleship. No matter where one is on their faith journey, let this season—from Easter Sunday through Pentecost—be the time to learn again what it means to belong to our sacrificial, loving, all-powerful Savior. In all facets of formation; your prayer, Scripture-reading, participation in the sacraments, and works of grace, love, and justice, listen to His voice and seek His guidance.

But also, the risen Lord inspires us to be sent outward—into parishes, campuses, and neighborhoods—to witness His life and hopeful promise that death does not have the final word. In the power of the Holy Spirit, the Easter season strengthens the Body of Christ for mission, deepening communion, and service. We pray that this beautiful, online community, the VLCFF, will become living proclamations of "Alleluia," where faith is rekindled and others are invited to encounter the Lord who is alive. Happy Easter!

A Track for Everyone

The VLCFF has an e-course for everyone—in a wide variety of subjects and tracks designed to help form disciples and strengthen the life of the Body of Christ in every season of ministry. For those called to accompany others, we provide tracks in Adult Formation Leadership, Youth Ministry, Catechesis, and Disabilities Ministry—equipping learners to serve with pastoral skill, knowledge, and compassion. For deeper grounding in what the Church believes, our Catholic Culture, Catholic Doctrine, and Church History tracks connect tradition to today's questions and opportunities for evangelization.

We also invite focused study through tracks on Scripture and Spirituality, helping learners pray, interpret, and proclaim the Word with confidence. Marian Studies offers a contemplative path into discipleship with Mary, while Social Justice formation integrates Catholic social teaching with concrete practices of mercy and mission. Across every track, our aim is the same: to form mature, Spirit-led disciples who can build up the Church and witness Christ to the world. Check out our Course Catalog to view all these tracks and the courses within them!

The Radiate Christ Awards

Earlier this year, we were invited to attend an appreciation banquet, Radiate Christ Awards, organized by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati's Center for the New Evangelization, where six awardees received recognition for their work within their parishes. It was truly a celebration of lay ministers who go the extra mile as missionary disciples in their areas of ministry. Archbishop Emeritus Dennis M. Schnurr was in attendance, as was about 200 people from all over the archdiocese.

In addition to several other organizations who were there, the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives (IPI) also showed their support by graciously donating toward the ceremony, and was represented by Dorothy Mensah-Aggrey (Associate Director for English Curriculum) and Liliana Montoya (Associate Director of Spanish Curriculum and Ministry). The IPI is truly blessed to work with the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, one of our 70+ Diocesan Partners, to promote and celebrate the lay ministry happening there, especially through the English and Spanish courses offered to them here at the VLCFF!

Celebrating Two UD Journeys

On January 21st, at the University of Dayton Service Anniversary Luncheon, we joyfully celebrated two remarkable milestones of our team: Jeaninne Chaffin's 30th year at the University, and Margie McCrate's 25th. Jeaninne began her UD journey in 1995, supporting both the History and Philosophy Departments, and later found her home with us, where she's spent the past 25 years working alongside Sr. Angela Ann as an Administrative Assistant. Her dedication has helped connect us to the global Church, and she is known for her warm communication with people across the country and the world.

Margie joined UD in 2000, embracing a new chapter after years as a stay-at-home mom, and grew through roles in Religious Studies, Christian Leadership, and lastly, the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives. Also as an Administrative Assistant, her work has supported countless facilitators and students, fostering faith formation year after year.

Both Jeaninne and Margie embody the spirit of service that defines our mission, and we have been so blessed by their years of dedication!

Our Mission

The Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation (VLCFF) is a growing initiative to offer adult religious education and faith formation anytime and anywhere via the internet. The goal is to support the church's professional ministry of religious education and faith formation in cyberspace.

The VLCFF is coordinated and sponsored by the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives (IPI) at the University of Dayton - a Catholic Marianist Institution.

From Eric F. Spina, University of Dayton President:
"The Institute for Pastoral Initiatives is a pioneer in the e-learning field, delivering 24-7 remote classes to dioceses worldwide long before the pandemic prompted schools to go online and offer hybrid learning. With a successful model already in place, the VLCFF is poised to reach [even] more people with faith formation classes."

"I have completed many courses through University of Dayton VLCFF online. I keep thinking I am through but the classes you offer are so interesting and beneficial for my job and in my personal faith growth that I continue taking classes!"

"I am eternally grateful to University of Dayton for treating me not as just a student, but as family. This was my first experience with online classes and I found myself struggling during a particular course since I was juggling studies, work, family and other activities. I felt swamped. I quickly fell behind and just as I was contemplating if I should quit, my facilitator taught me how to balance my assignments."

"So, every session has been awesome! Your facilitators take the time to give feedback on a personal level as well as reach out when assistance is needed."
