My name is Dr. Allison Shardell (call me Allison!) and I am the Director of Religious Education at St. Leonard Church in Heath, Ohio, and I also lead the Deaf and Disabilities Ministry, the American Sign Language program, and Vacation Bible School. I have my doctoral degree in human services with a concentration on autism and other childhood developmental disabilities, and a certificate in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies, as well as VLCFF's special needs catechesis certification and catechist 1 and 2 certification. I am also currently working towards my graduate certificate in Education of Deaf Children with Other Disabilities from Gallaudet University. Before accepting my position as a DRE, I was an autism behavior specialist and vocational counselor, as well as a volunteer preschool and kindergarten catechist. I am working towards my dual teaching licensure in Deaf Education and Mild/Moderate Special Education. I have four wonderful (and very active) children--my oldest, my 14 year old biological son who has diagnoses of autism, Central Auditory Processing Disorder (a form of hearing loss) and ADHD, has a knack for all things technology. My 10 year old daughter was adopted from Vietnam and is a competitive gymnast. My 9 year old biological daughter loves violin and reading. Our newest, a 4 year old little boy we adopted from China May 2015, has profound bilateral hearing loss, so as a family, we are learning American Sign Language. In my spare time, I teach martial arts (Tang Soo Do) and I also love cooking, photography, spending time in nature, and traveling the world. Some of my favorite moments have been exploring Vietnam and China.
