Course Summary
The Directory for Catechesis, presented to the universal Church on June 24, 2020, was developed to address the current needs of catechesis such as the globalization of culture, the rise of a digital culture, the need for the “way of beauty” in catechesis, and other pastoral needs and opportunities for catechesis. This e-course will explore those issues as well as practical guidelines for catechesis within the work of evangelization. The e-course is recommended for all involved in formal religious education.
Successful completion of this course earns 2.5 CEU's.
General Course Objectives
- Students will be able to explain what is meant by the primacy of evangelization in the catechetical process
- Students will be able to define the pedagogy of God and kerygmatic catechesis
- Students will articulate the dimensions of catechist formation
- Students will be able to create and evaluate practical catechetical methods, including the way of beauty, for various groups of participants
- Students will apply methods of catechesis to various cultures including the digital culture

Course Structure and Highlights
- Week 1: The Nature of Catechesis
- Students will be able to describe the primacy of evangelization in the catechetical process
- Students will be able to explain what is meant by kerygmatic catechesis and the pedagogy of God
- Students will be able to explain how the baptismal catechumenate influences all catechesis
- Week 2: The Vocation and Formation of Catechists
- Students will be able to articulate the dimensions of catechist formation
- Students will be able to articulate an understanding of the three key dimensions of catechist formation with personal application.
- Students will be able to explain how being a catechist, acting as a catechist, and the art of knowing how to be with are interrelated aspects of formation.
- Week 3: The Process of Catechesis
- Students will be able to create and evaluate practical catechetical methods, including the way of beauty, for various groups of participants
- Students will articulate the place of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in the process of catechesis
- Students will demonstrate understanding of the relationship between content and method
- Week 4: Catechesis in the Lives of Persons
- Students will be able to create and evaluate practical catechetical methods, including the way of beauty, for various groups of participants
- Students will Identify ways of catechizing in, with, and of the family
- Students will be able to valuate practical catechetical methods for various groups of participants
- Week 5: Catechesis in Community and Culture
- Students will be able to apply methods of catechesis to various cultures including the digital culture
- Students will articulate how catechesis is both present in and can assist the proper use of the digital culture
- Students will understand the process of inculturation
